Carla Segura is a Canadian
multi-talented artist. She was born in Caracas - Venezuela in 1976. She
permanently moved to Canada in 1992 and now resides in Toronto, Ontario.
She attended the Ontario College of Art and Design in 1997 and graduated in
2001.
After completing her Foundation Studies at the College, she decided to enter the
Material Arts and Design program which consisted of Metal, Fibre and Ceramic
Arts. After a year of media exploration she chose to major in Metal
Arts/Silversmithing.
Her love and passion for Metal Arts began the minute she set foot in the Studios
where she worked with precious and semi-precious metals.
She considered her education at the College to be somewhat basic and limited
which resulted in her taking the initiative to become a self-taught artist. This
combined with her constant curiosity and creativity guided her not only to know
more about her craft but also helped her develop a very unique style of work.
Her style is inspired by organic forms and archaic objects combined with modern
architectural and industrial influences. Her work includes techniques such as
forging, casting, soldering and fusing as well as the assemblage of diverse
materials such as organic objects (bones, stones, shells and wood), precious and
semi-precious metals, machine parts, and modern materials such as rubber and
resins.
